  1. Start with the purpose of the website. Before you look at anything else you need to define the purpose of your website. What do you want the people that visit your site to do? Give you their email address? Buy something? Call for an appointment? Interact with you by leaving a comment?
    The biggest mistake that business owners make is that they skip this step and then wonder where all their customers are?
     
  2. Define the purpose of each page. Each page must have a single purpose that leads the visitor to achieve the overall purpose of the website. Each page needs to help build up momentum so that the person when arriving at the final destination page takes the action you want them to take. Ask yourself the question - what is the purpose of this page? What action does the person reading the page need to take? Must they continue to another page? Must they click on a buy now button, must they fill in their details? Whatever the purpose make sure that it has one.

  7. ONLY NOW do you start on the look of the site. Typical “website design houses” focus on the look first and the functionality is an afterthought. Though “looks” are important, it’s what your website offers in products and solutions, how it merchandises both of these, and how search-engine friendly its copy and design are that together determine its effectiveness.
     
  8. Get the navigation and graphics right. Many typical design houses also use graphic images for site navigation and even for copy, despite the fact that search engines can not read text presented graphically.
     
  9. Keep it simple and clean. Stay focused on the purpose of the site and the journey that you want a visitor to take to reach that purpose. If the journey is engaging, exciting and easy to take then your conversions from visitor to customer will be higher.
     
  10. Don’t wait more than 3 weeks for a new website. You have a business to run and should not be held up by focusing on your website.
